Planning for Mailbox Servers

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Mailbox server role hosts mailbox databases and provides e-mail storage and advanced scheduling services for Microsoft Office Outlook users. The Mailbox server role can also host a public folder database, which provides a foundation for workflow, document sharing, and other forms of collaboration. Servers on which the Mailbox server role is installed are called Mailbox servers.
Before installation, we recommend that you take the time to plan for your Mailbox server role deployment. This topic provides the following planning considerations:

·      Sizing databases   You must consider several factors when planning the size of your mailbox databases. This section will help you understand these factors and decide what limit you should enforce on your databases.

·      Planning for public folders   Although you can decide whether you want to host a public folder database, there are some scenarios in which you must host one. For example, you will host a public folder database if you have Office Outlook 2003 clients in your organization or if your Exchange server will interoperate with Lotus Notes. This section will help you decide whether you want to use public folders in your organization.

·      Cohosting with other server roles   Provided that you are not deploying clustered Mailbox servers, you can deploy the Mailbox server role on computers that also have any combination of the Client Access, Hub Transport, and Unified Messaging (UM) server roles installed. This section helps you decide what combination of server roles best suits the needs of your organization.

·      Planning for clustered Mailbox servers   If you plan on deploying clustered Mailbox servers, this section will help you decide which of the two Exchange clustering solutions is best for your organization.

The recommended maximum database size for Exchange 2007 is greater than the recommended maximum size in previous versions of Exchange Server. For information about recommended database sizes in Exchange 2007, see “Continuous Replication and Database Size” in “Planning Disk Storage” in Exchange Server 2007 Help (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65320).

Generally, there are a few common reasons for limiting the size of individual databases:

·      Streaming backup and restore   When using streaming backups, larger databases take longer to back up and restore, which can adversely affect Restore Time Objectives (RTOs).

·      Offline database maintenance or repair   It may be necessary to use Exchange Server Database Utilities (Eseutil.exe) to defragment, repair, or check the consistency of a database. The larger the database, the longer these procedures will take.

·      Online maintenance   For optimal database efficiency, it is important to make sure that online maintenance, which includes online defragmentation and other tasks, is completed for each database at least once every two weeks.

In addition to the significant architecture changes found in Exchange 2007, another feature, called continuous replication, also affects our recommendation for maximum database size. Exchange 2007 has two forms of continuous replication: local continuous replication (LCR) and cluster continuous replication (CCR). LCR and CCR completely change the database size recommendations in previous versions of Exchange Server. For more information about the impact of LCR and CCR on database size, see “Planning for Local Continuous Replication” and “Planning for Cluster Continuous Replication” in Exchange Server 2007 Help (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65320).

For more information about disk storage, see “Planning Disk Storage” in Exchange Server 2007 Help (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65320).

When planning for the size of your databases, you should also plan for how you will enforce limits on database size, either at the database level or at the individual mailbox level. For detailed syntax and parameter information, see “Set-MailboxDatabase” and “Set-Mailbox” in Exchange Server 2007 Help (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79424).

Before you deploy public folders, it is important to familiarize yourself with the functionality that public folders provide to make sure that they meet the needs of your organization.

Exchange Server public folders are intended to serve as a repository for information that is shared among many users. You should use public folders when your business requires data replication to multiple servers. Access to public folders is integrated with regular mailbox access through the MAPI protocol.

You must use public folders if your Exchange 2007 organization meets the following criteria:

·      You have Outlook 2003 clients in your organization.

·      Your Exchange server will interoperate with Lotus Notes.

Public folders are generally used for the following purposes:

·      Shared communication. For example, public folders can be used for discussions through message posts, shared e-mail messages, contacts, group calendars, and archiving of distribution list posts.

·      Shared content management. Similar to file shares, public folders can be used to store content, such as documentation. Public folders are also helpful for sharing content if you do not require versioning.

·      Repository purposes. If you require offline storage of information or replicated storage of information, public folders are an ideal repository.

However, public folders were not designed for the following functions:

·     Archiving data. Users who have mailbox limits sometimes use public folders, instead of personal folder (.pst) files, to archive data. We do not recommend this practice because it increases storage on public folder servers and undermines the goal of mailbox limits.

·      Document sharing and collaboration. Public folders do not provide versioning or other document management features, such as controlled check-in and check-out functionality and automatic notification of content changes.

In addition to evaluating the features and functionality of Exchange public folders, you should evaluate the features and functionality that are provided by Microsoft Windows SharePoint Products and Technologies for data repositories and collaboration tools. For more information about SharePoint Portal Server 2007, see the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server TechCenter.

Provided that you are not deploying clustered Mailbox servers, the Client Access server role, Hub Transport server role, Mailbox server role, and Unified Messaging server role can coexist on the same computer in any combination. When considering what combination of server roles to deploy, you should base your decision on capacity and performance planning and on your security and availability requirements. For more information, see the following topics in Exchange Server 2007 Help (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65320):

·      Planning Processor and Memory Configurations

·      Planning Disk Storage

·      Security and Protection

·      High Availability Strategies

It is also a good idea to validate your plan for how you will position your Exchange servers in a test environment. To help with this validation, you can gather data from your existing messaging environment about how your users use Exchange. You can also use various tools to simulate your actual usage in your test environment. For more information about the tools you can use to test your Exchange solutions, see the following :

·      Microsoft Exchange Server Jetstress Tool

1.You performed an open database backup of each tablespace by putting the tablespaces in backup
mode using the ALTER TABLESPACE .. BEGIN BACKUP command.
However, you forgot to end the backup of one of the tablespaces by using the ALTER TABLESPACE ..
END BACKUP command. What would happen if you execute the SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE command in
this situation?
A.The database is closed but not dismounted.
B.The database remains open and the command to shut down fails.
C.The database instance shuts down leaving the tablespace as it is.
D.The database instance shuts down by taking the tablespace out of the backup mode automatically.
Answer : B
2.In this scenario, assume that you archive logs 101 to 104 to two archiving destinations, /log1 and /log2.
The control file contains archived log records as follows:
Sequence Filename
101 /log1/log_1_101.arc
101 /log2/log_1_101.arc
102 /log1/log_1_102.arc
102 /log2/log_1_102.arc
103 /log1/log_1_103.arc
103 /log2/log_1_103.arc
104 /log1/log_1_104.arc
104 /log2/log_1_104.arc
You accidentally delete logs 102 and 104 from log 1.
You run this command:
BACKUP ARCHIVELOG FROM SEQUENCE 101 UNTIL SEQUENCE 105? What happens?
A.RMAN aborts and sends an error message to the alert log.
B.An error message is returned by RMAN, and the ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT
command must be provided for RMAN to continue using log2.
C.RMAN creates a backup set with log2, then returns an error before moving to the next log file. RMAN
resumes once the BACKUP BACKUPSET 102? and BACKUP BACKUPSET 104? commands are provided
as appropriate.
D.RMAN automatically continues without any notifications as follows:
Sequence RMAN Searches For RMAN Finds and Backs Up
121 /log1/log_1_101.arc /log1/log_1_101.arc
122 /log1/log_1_102.arc /log2/log_1_102.arc
123 /log1/log_1_103.arc /log1/log_1_103.arc
124 /log1/log_1_104.arc /log2/log_1_104.arc
Answer : D

OCP certification learning experience

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Since last June to August, which lasted more than three months to study hard and finally finished the final 025 exam, and September 10 Receiving OCP certificate, during the hard, I believe over 12 people can appreciate. Here and here itpub enthusiastic Friend gave me a lot of help, I will study their own experience and that everyone shared.
1Z0-045:oracle database 10g:new features for oracle8i ocps

Method 1: apply enough time, want to study solid OCP students:

We should carefully watch materials, not take part in the training of students may appear to be some difficulty, but you insist on, and strive to see it do not look to skip the first place; best fitted their Oracle systems, side edge to do reading exercises at the same time For the results of exercises to do by the record copy.
1. Watch one chapter official materials.
2. Watch the contents of this chapter PPT, it is the content of each chapter a summary manner, as you read chapter one mind may be a paste, often to remember some details of the fragmentation of the overall structure of neglect. PPT can be compared to your quick sort out the main contents of this chapter.
3. Does the content of this chapter STS, not the time to do all the finish look at the subject, and should be a problem to do watch the answer to a problem. The questions appear in dynamic performance should attempt to do the experiment yourself.
4. Re-read, this will feel relatively faster; watch the contents of five chapters, five chapters look PPT, five chapters to do STS.
5. Look for each class of PPT, from the first chapter to see the final chapter, you will have the structure of the course very clear and make the course of the STS. (4,5 can be combined according to your situation.)
6. ITPUB finally find some and examination-related topic, read a good study to find out the correct answer, the examination will be encountered.

In this way, the success rate of review of the examination should be 99%.

Method Two: Time is very tight for the students, recommend the following methods:
1. Thorougly book is essential.
2. Look PPT is necessary, many of the options is to test the contents of the PPT, in particular PL / SQL; reading a lesson book; watch a lesson PPT, from the first chapter to see the final chapter, you will the structure of this course is very clear.
3. Repeatedly to do the course of the STS, at least twice to be done; but not to Chapter 1 of Chapter 1 to do, because the contents of each chapter have focused on, so the contents of this chapter to test the correct answer to question also will be the focus of content, chaiyaphum guessed; so each title according to the number of different sections, choose one to do a number of chapters, in general more appropriate to questions 50-60. Do not make time to look at all the finished issue, and should look to do a problem the answer to a problem; repeatedly so, in order to save time, then made a mistake in the title only explanation for the title on to do do not have to look a.
4. ITPUB find some and examination-related topics, read a good study to find out the correct answer, the examination will be encountered.

No matter what way, it would hope that we can successfully pass the exam!

Note: 023 is behind the three basic classes, we must learn a very down-to-earth, because only 026 of 024,025 and 023 on the contents of the expansion, the need for memory in place, we must not be lazy.

In fact, get the OCP Certificate  is your DBA career start (if you are going to make the DBA), this time you just mastered the basic concepts and principles, the actual distance is very much far from the application, you also need to spend a lot of time to to do the experiment to simulate a variety of issues, problem-solving; make a real DBA, not just a paper.

For the MCSE 2000, a candidate needs to pass five Core Exams (Four operating system exams, one design exam) and two electives. For the MCSE NT 4.0 (retired), a candidate needed to pass four Core Exams (Networking Essentials, Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server and Windows NT Server in the Enterprise) and two electives.

Prometric Testing ID
Your Prometric Testing ID is your unique identifier for the Oracle Certification Program. Multiple Prometric Testing IDs can jeopardize the validity of your Oracle certification records. You will have a Prometric Testing ID if you completed at least one Oracle certification exam in the past.
If you have not completed any Oracle Certification Program exams, the testing system will generate your Prometric Testing ID. Be sure to record this number for future Oracle exam appointments.
Candidates who have previously taken Siebel certification exams at Pearson VUE should have received a Prometric ID via e-mail:
If you did not receive this Prometric ID, contact siebelcert_ww@oracle.com to receive it.
o If you had an account at Pearson VUE as well as Prometric, every effort has been made to merge the two profiles. In some cases, these profiles are not merged and you must request Prometric to merge the Prometric ID that contains your Siebel certification information with the ID that contains your Oracle certification information.
If, for any reason, you have two Prometric IDs, follow these instructions to merge them:
Go to http://www.prometric.com/ContactUs/TestTakers/GlobalCSForm.html
In the e-mail template, choose Other in the Subject line.
In the body of the e-mail message, type “Request: Merge Multiple Prometric IDs for Oracle Certification Customer” and include the following information:
Full name
First Prometric ID
Second Prometric ID
Other Prometric ID (All records will be merged under your original Prometric ID unless you specify otherwise)
The nature of your problem (for example, missing certificate)
Complete mailing address
Telephone number
E-mail address

Arriving at the testing center
You must be prepared to show at least two forms of identification. One must be a government-issued photo identification. Both forms of identification must contain your signature
If you redeemed a voucher to pay for your exam, you must bring it to your test appointment. Present this voucher to the proctor prior to testing.
Arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the testing center personnel may choose not to seat you if doing so disrupts the other examinees in the testing room.
You are not permitted to bring papers, books, bags, computers, personal organizers, or calculators into the testing room. The testing center personnel will provide you with writing paper for use while testing. All writing paper is collected and destroyed by testing center personnel at the end of the exam.
Prior to taking the exam, you will be required to accept the terms and conditions of the Oracle Certification Candidate Agreement. You will view the agreement on screen before the test starts. You can also view this agreement prior to arriving at the testing center by clicking the following link:
http://www.oracle.com/global/us/education/certification/canagreemt.html

Your beta exam results will be sent by mail approximately 10 weeks after the close of the beta exam. You can view further information about beta exams on the Beta Information Web page.

Special testing assistance for people with disabilities
If you are disabled and require special assistance when completing your exam, call Prometric at 1-800-967-1139 (from the U.S. and Canada) and ask to be referred to the special assistance office.

User Profiles Overview in User Data and Settings Management

User Profiles Overview in User Data and Settings Management

–from Microsoft

A user profile describes the desktop computing configuration for a specific user, including the users environment and preference settings.

A profile is created the first time that a user logs on to a computer running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT Workstation. A user profile is a group of settings and files that defines the environment that the system loads when a user logs on. It includes all the user-specific configuration settings, such as program items, screen colors, network connections, printer connections, mouse settings, and window size and position. Profiles are not user policies and the user has a profile even if you don’t use Group Policy.

A user’s data can be stored on the local hard disk drive, or IntelliMirror can be set so that the data roams with the user wherever he or she logs on. User data can include shortcuts to executable files, personal files, and user settings, such as a custom dictionary.

Depending on how you manage your network, you or a user can define the desktop settings.

The following user profiles are available in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000 Professional:

Local User Profile. Created the first time that a user logs on to a computer, the local user profile is stored on a computer’s local hard disk. Any changes made to the local user profile are specific to the computer on which the changes are made.

Roaming User Profile. A copy of the local profile is copied to, and stored on a server share. This profile is downloaded every time that a user logs on to any computer on the network, and any changes made to a roaming user profile are synchronized with the server copy upon logoff.

Mandatory User Profile. A type of profile that administrators can use to specify particular settings for users. Only system administrators can make changes to mandatory user profiles. Changes made by the user to desktop settings are lost when the user logs off.

Temporary User Profile. A temporary profile is issued any time that an error condition prevents the users profile from being loaded. Temporary profiles are deleted at the end of each session – changes made by the user to their desktop settings and files are lost when the user logs off.

Note
If you need to provide managed desktop configurations for groups of users or computers, consider using Group Policy instead of mandatory profiles.

Advantages of User Profiles
A primary goal of user profiles is to separate each users settings and data from that of other users and the local computer. Separating each users state provides several advantages:

It allows for stateless computers. An organization can configure computers to store all the key user settings and data away from the local computer. This allows for much easier computer replacement and backup. When a computer needs replacing, it can simply be swapped outall of the users state information is safely maintained separately on the network and is independent of a particular computer. When the user logs onto the new computer for the first time, the server copy of the users state is copied to the new computer.

It allows a users system and desktop customizations to travel with the user from computer to computer, without requiring the user to reconfigure any settings. When a user logs on to any computer on the network that supports the roaming profile, the users desktop appears just as that user left it before logging off. With roaming user support, users can share computers, but each user has his or her personal desktop (both roaming and mandatory profiles support this functionality).
